Bedroom Vastu direction

Which direction should the main bedroom be in?

The VastuCalc app’s simplified Vastu table lists the south-west for the main bedroom and asks you to review the north-east, south-east and centre. This guide explains the convention, how Feng Shui compares, which way to point the bed head, and what to change when the room cannot move.

Zones not listed carry no specific preference in the app’s table. The two traditions differ by design; neither is a prediction, and “review placement” is a prompt to look again, not a verdict.

If the bedroom is already fixed

  • Turn the bed so the head rests to the south or the east, if the door and windows allow it.
  • Keep the bed out of the direct line of the door and away from a wall shared with the bathroom, so the room feels settled.
  • Put the heaviest wardrobe on the south or west wall and leave the north-east side of the room light.
  • Avoid a mirror that faces the bed directly; move it to a cupboard door or the dressing corner.
  • Use warm, dim light at night and keep cables and chargers off the floor beside the bed.

Measure north before you decide

Stand at the centre of the home with a compass app held away from the fridge, grilles and steel door frames, and compare the reading with the north arrow on your plan. The VastuCalc app’s compass warns when nearby metal distorts a reading.

The south-west convention

Placing the main bedroom in the south-west is a widely taught modern Vastu convention: the south-west is treated as the heaviest, most stable corner of the plan, so the most private and permanent room goes there. The classical house-building chapter of the Brihat Samhita describes storage in the south-west rather than a bedroom, so treat this as lineage teaching rather than scripture; the app presents it the same way.

Zones to review are the north-east, traditionally kept light and open; the south-east, the fire corner usually given to the kitchen; and the centre, kept clear. Children’s and guest bedrooms follow different lists in the app, the west, north-west and east, so this page is about the main bedroom only.

Feng Shui’s view

The app’s Feng Shui table also suggests the south-west, which the bagua reads as Relationships, and adds the west; it asks you to review only the centre. On the main bedroom the two traditions broadly agree, which is unusual.

Bed head direction

The sleeping orientation is the part of bedroom Vastu that is actually classical: the Brihat Samhita gives a traditional preference for where the head rests. The common modern reading is head towards the south, with east as the alternative, and the head kept away from the north. This is a tradition about rest and orientation, not a medical claim; if you sleep well as you are, nothing needs to change.

Frequently asked questions

Can the main bedroom be in the north-east?

The simplified table asks you to review it, because the north-east is traditionally kept light and open. In a fixed flat, keep the room uncluttered, place the bed with its head to the south or east, and put heavy furniture on the south or west wall. Nothing further is needed.

Which way should the head of the bed point?

South is the common traditional preference and east the alternative; the head is kept away from the north. It is a tradition about rest and orientation, not a medical rule, so change it only if it is convenient.

Is a bedroom in the south-east a problem?

The south-east is the fire corner usually given to the kitchen, so the table asks you to review a bedroom there. Practical steps are cooler colours, good ventilation and the bed head to the south; no construction is implied.

Where should children’s and guest bedrooms go?

The app lists the west, north-west and east for a children’s bedroom and the north-west and west for a guest bedroom, while asking you to review the south-west for both, since that corner is reserved for the main bedroom.

Do Vastu and Feng Shui agree on the bedroom?

Largely. Both suggest the south-west; Feng Shui adds the west and reviews only the centre, while Vastu also reviews the north-east and south-east. Pick one framework and use it consistently.
