Traditional guidance, presented as such: Vastu describes preferences, not outcomes.
How to read the grid
Hold your plan with the road side at the top. The front of the plot is the top row of the grid, so an east-facing plot has east at the front, north-east in the front-left corner and south-east in the front-right corner. The centre, called the Brahmasthan in Vastu, is the middle cell and is traditionally kept open and light.
Facing does not change which direction suits a room. A kitchen is listed under the south-east whether the plot faces north or south; what changes is where that south-east corner sits on your drawing. The selector simply rotates the grid so you can find each zone without a compass in hand.
What this table is, and is not
The VastuCalc app uses a simplified eight-direction table: eight compass zones plus the centre, with a short suggested list and a review list for 23 room types. It is a practical summary for modern flats and plots, not a classical 81-pada Vastu Purusha Mandala, which divides a site into 9 × 9 squares and treats entrance positions along each side differently.
The traditional reference for house layout is the Brihat Samhita of Varahamihira. Its house-building chapter places worship in the north-east and the kitchen in the south-east, and describes entrance positions along each side in far finer detail than a cardinal facing alone can capture. A full reading of that text needs a practitioner and a measured plan.

Suggested, review, and everything else
“Suggested here” means the room appears in the tradition’s preferred list for that zone. “Review placement” means the room appears in the list traditionally avoided there: a prompt to look again, weigh practical options and consult someone you trust, not a verdict. Rooms that appear in neither list carry no specific preference in this table.
Many homes place rooms outside the suggested zones and work perfectly well. If a room is already built, see the kitchen, bedroom and main door guides for practical adjustments that need no construction.
