Main door Vastu direction

Which direction should the main door face?

The VastuCalc app’s simplified Vastu table lists the north, east and north-east for the main entrance and asks you to review the south and south-west. This guide explains why, how Feng Shui differs, what classical texts actually say about door position, and how to improve an entrance you cannot move.

Zones not listed carry no specific preference in the app’s table. The two traditions differ by design; neither is a prediction, and “review placement” is a prompt to look again, not a verdict.

If the entrance is already fixed

  • Keep the entrance bright: a working light outside and a lamp or daylight just inside.
  • Keep it unobstructed: no shoe rack, cycle or dustbin in the line of the door, and let the door open fully.
  • Make the door itself the best-finished one in the house: clean, well oiled, with a clear nameplate.
  • Use a threshold or a doormat and keep the approach clean; a plant on either side is a traditional touch.
  • Fix anything that squeaks, sticks or rattles; a door that works well is the first thing every visitor notices.

Measure north before you decide

Stand at the centre of the home with a compass app held away from the fridge, grilles and steel door frames, and compare the reading with the north arrow on your plan. The VastuCalc app’s compass warns when nearby metal distorts a reading.

Traditional guidance, presented as such: an entrance direction is a preference, never a verdict on a home.

What the simplified table says

North, east and north-east are the suggested zones: they are the directions traditionally associated with morning light and an open, welcoming approach. The south and south-west appear in the review list because those sides are usually given to heavy, private rooms. The west is not listed either way, so the table has no specific preference for a west-facing door.

What the classical text actually says

The house-building chapter of the Brihat Samhita does not judge a door by cardinal facing alone. It divides each side of the site into positions, called padas, and treats the door’s position along that side as what matters, so a south-facing door in one position is read differently from one a few metres along. The app’s eight-direction table cannot make that distinction, which is why a south entrance is a prompt to review rather than a verdict.

Feng Shui takes a different view

The app’s Feng Shui table suggests the east, south and north for the entrance and reviews only the centre. The south, which Vastu asks you to review, is a suggested zone in Feng Shui, where it is read as Fame and Recognition. When two long traditions disagree this plainly, neither can be a prediction. Choose the framework that suits your household and apply it consistently.

Measure the door, not the plot

The facing of a door is the direction you look when stepping out through it. Stand on the threshold with a compass app held away from the steel door frame and grille, note the reading, and compare it with the north arrow on your plan. A plot can face one way and its door another, and it is the door that this guide is about.

Frequently asked questions

Is a south-facing main door bad?

No. The simplified table asks you to review it, because the south side is usually given to heavy, private rooms. Classical texts read a door by its position along the side, not by the compass alone, so a south door is not a judgement. Keep it bright, clear and well made, and use the practical list above.

Which is the best direction for the main door?

The app’s simplified Vastu table lists the north, east and north-east. Feng Shui lists the east, south and north. Both are traditional preferences, and an entrance in any direction can be well designed.

What about a west-facing door?

The west is in neither the suggested nor the review list of the app’s Vastu table, so it carries no specific preference. Treat it as neutral and focus on light, access and finish.

Does the flat’s door or the building gate count?

For a flat, use the flat’s own door, the one you lock. The building gate and lift lobby belong to the society and are outside your control; the app’s room guide treats the flat’s outer walls as the boundary.

Can I change the facing of an existing door?

Rarely, and only with an architect and the society’s approval. The practical adjustments above, light, a clear approach and a well-made door, are what most households actually do, and they need no construction.

Check your entrance in the app

The VastuCalc app shows the main entrance, and 22 other rooms, on a grid that rotates with a live compass, in Vastu or Feng Shui — offline, in English, Hindi and Marathi.
