Griha pravesh muhurat

How a griha pravesh muhurat is chosen

There is no single lucky date for all of India. A housewarming muhurat is worked out from several panchang elements for a specific place and sunrise, which is why this page explains the method and gives you a practical checklist instead of a date list.

The four panchang checks a date must pass together

  1. Nakshatra shuddhiOnly certain lunar mansions are considered suitable for entering a new home.
  2. Weekday (vara)Some weekdays are traditionally preferred and others set aside for a griha pravesh.
  3. Tithi shuddhiThe lunar day must be one of the tithis considered favourable; several are excluded.
  4. Lunar-month shuddhiOnly some lunar months are used, and a leaped (adhik) month is left out entirely.

Further exclusions

  • Days when Venus or Jupiter are combust (asta), too close to the Sun to be seen, are excluded.
  • A panchang day runs from sunrise to sunrise, so the same calendar date can qualify in one city and not in another.

Method as published by Drik Panchang. The final time should come from a scholar or your family priest.

Traditional guidance, presented as such: this page explains how a muhurat is chosen, not when yours is.

Why this site publishes no all-India date list

Panchang shuddhi is location-based. A tithi or nakshatra begins and ends at a fixed instant, but a panchang day is counted from local sunrise, so whether a date qualifies depends on where you live; Nagpur and Mumbai can differ. An all-India list would be right for some readers and quietly wrong for others. The calendars that publish such lists do so per city, and copying their dates here would be neither accurate nor fair to them.

VastuCalc does not calculate muhurats. The app’s daily panchang card shows the tithi, paksha, nakshatra and weekday for today, and says plainly that this is not a muhurat.

The method, step by step

As Drik Panchang describes it, a griha pravesh date must pass four checks together: the nakshatra, the weekday, the tithi and the lunar month must each be suitable. Leaped (adhik) months are excluded, and so are days when Venus or Jupiter are combust (asta), because both planets are traditionally considered important for auspicious beginnings.

Once a day passes, the auspicious window within it is chosen from the day’s lagna and other factors, which is why published muhurats give a start and an end time rather than a whole day. That final step is where a family priest or a scholar you trust should have the last word; they also weigh family customs, regional calendars and the people who will perform the puja.

A practical moving checklist

None of this is astrological. It is the work that makes the day itself go smoothly, whichever date you settle on.

  • Utilities: have electricity, water and gas connections transferred or started a week ahead, and test every switch and tap.
  • Deep clean: have the home cleaned before furniture arrives, including inside cupboards, lofts and under sinks.
  • Pest control: schedule a treatment and leave the gap the technician recommends before moving in.
  • Measurements: measure doors, lifts and stairwells so beds, wardrobes and the fridge actually fit through.
  • Document vault: keep the sale deed, registration receipt, society NOC, warranties and keys in one folder, with photographs backed up.
  • First-night box: pack bedding, a lamp, a kettle, chargers and medicines separately so nothing is lost in the move.

Frequently asked questions

Which nakshatras are good for griha pravesh?

Traditional lists name a handful of nakshatras as suitable, but the nakshatra is only one of four checks and the list varies between regional calendars. Rather than publish a partial list, we point you to a per-city panchang and to a priest who knows your family’s custom.

Is a muhurat the same everywhere in India on a given date?

No. Tithis and nakshatras change at fixed instants, but the panchang day runs from sunrise to sunrise and sunrise differs by place, so the same date can pass in one city and fail in another. Always look up timings for your own location.

What is an adhik (leaped) month?

The lunar calendar adds an extra month roughly every 32 months to stay aligned with the solar year. That added month is traditionally skipped for new beginnings such as a griha pravesh, so it is excluded from the date search.

What does it mean that Venus or Jupiter is combust?

A planet is combust (asta) when it is so close to the Sun in the sky that it cannot be seen. Traditional muhurat practice sets such periods aside for auspicious beginnings, so those days are removed from the candidates.

Does the VastuCalc app give me a griha pravesh date?

No. The app shows today’s panchang elements, the tithi, paksha, nakshatra and weekday, with a clear note that this is not a muhurat. Use it to follow the calendar, and confirm the actual date and time with a scholar or priest.

Can I move in without a muhurat?

Many families do, and the practical checklist on this page matters on any date. If a muhurat is important to your household, choose it the way the tradition describes and plan the move around it.

Follow today’s panchang in the app

The VastuCalc app’s Home & Vibe tab shows today’s tithi, paksha, nakshatra and weekday for Indian Standard Time, with the same honest note: this is a calendar, not a muhurat.
